Special-Purpose Transformers

Electric Furnace Transformer

Representative configuration. The offered model, dimensions and interfaces are confirmed with the technical proposal.

Overview

Entogo supplies electric-furnace transformers for metallurgical processes. Furnace type, secondary current, voltage range, impedance, tap operation and the complete heat cycle determine the design rather than plant demand alone.

Entogo supplies this project equipment through manufacturing partners. Entogo Inc. in Toronto coordinates technical selection, supply scope and order support.

Specification Value
Process duty Arc or submerged-arc furnace application identified in the brief
Power rating MVA related to furnace duty and the agreed operating cycle
Secondary circuit Working voltage range, high-current terminals and conductor interfaces
Regulation On-load or off-circuit tapping selected for the process
Impedance and reactor Transformer/reactor scope and fault forces reviewed together
Cooling Self-cooled or forced-oil/water arrangement according to design
Thermal duty Heat cycle, short-time peaks, harmonics and cooling-water conditions
Acceptance scope Guarantee schedule, test plan and process interface drawings

Reference configurations and selection criteria are shown together. The technical offer defines the matched ratings, tests and guaranteed performance for the ordered unit.

Start from the furnace operating cycle

Melting and holding stages impose different currents and durations. Specify the entire cycle, including interruptions and short-time peaks, before agreeing continuous and cyclic loading. A single maximum-MVA figure is insufficient.

Secondary terminals, flexible connections and any reactor must be coordinated with the furnace supplier. The required voltage steps and tap-changing duty follow the metallurgical process, not a generic distribution-transformer schedule.

Applications

  • Electric furnaces
  • Metallurgical processing
  • Industrial process power

Selection & project requirements

Can a standard distribution transformer supply an arc furnace?
Not by matching MVA alone. Furnace current, frequent load changes, fault forces, regulation and secondary interfaces require a dedicated assessment. The furnace manufacturer’s electrical duty should drive the transformer specification.
Is every furnace transformer suitable for induction heating?
No. Arc, submerged-arc and induction systems have different electrical interfaces. An induction installation may place a converter between the supply and the heating circuit; provide that topology and converter data before selecting the transformer.
When is forced-oil/water cooling considered?
Where the thermal design and installation call for it. State water temperature, flow, pressure, quality and redundancy requirements. The cooling arrangement and guaranteed loading must be agreed together rather than assumed from the product family.
What is needed for an EAF transformer replacement?
Send the existing nameplate, winding and tap diagrams, secondary voltage/current range, impedance/reactor data, heat cycle and dimensional interfaces. Include operating problems so the new design can address the process duty and replacement constraints.

For Canadian and US projects, include the utility specification, service frequency and required approvals. State whether the order is for the transformer alone or an integrated equipment package.
