Special-Purpose Transformers

Scott-Connected Transformer

Representative configuration. The offered model, dimensions and interfaces are confirmed with the technical proposal.

Overview

Entogo supplies Scott-connected transformers for conversion between three-phase and two-phase circuits. Define the two output loads, 90° phase relationship, voltage ratio and operating cycle before selecting the winding design.

Entogo supplies this project equipment through manufacturing partners. Entogo Inc. in Toronto coordinates technical selection, supply scope and order support.

Specification Value
Connection Scott T arrangement with main and teaser transformer sections
Output phase relation Two output circuits in quadrature: 90° electrical displacement
Winding construction Separate secondary windings; terminal identification agreed by drawing
Reference construction Dry-type, naturally cooled, open construction; enclosure separately specified
Rated duty Power, power factor and loading specified for each output circuit
Balance assessment Three-phase input balance evaluated against both output loads
Frequency and insulation Supply frequency, winding voltages and insulation coordinated per design
Verification Ratio, polarity, phase relationship and agreed load/test conditions

Reference configurations and selection criteria are shown together. The technical offer defines the matched ratings, tests and guaranteed performance for the ordered unit.

Define both output circuits

The Scott connection uses main and teaser sections to create the required two-phase relationship. A single total-kVA value hides how the two outputs will actually be loaded. Give the power factor and operating cycle of each circuit.

Input balance depends on the output loads and connection. Where process loads vary independently, evaluate the relevant operating cases instead of assuming the three-phase supply always remains balanced.

Applications

  • Special phase conversion
  • Industrial electrical systems
  • Project-specific power interfaces

Selection & project requirements

Does a Scott transformer simply create two ordinary single-phase supplies?
Its defining feature is the two-phase relationship, normally 90° between outputs. The connection and load duty must match the application. It is not interchangeable with an ordinary three-phase distribution transformer or an arbitrary pair of single-phase units.
Will the input remain balanced with unequal output loads?
Not automatically. The relationship between the two loads affects the three-phase input currents. Provide simultaneous and independent loading cases, power factor and the allowable unbalance for the network study.
Is this automatically a railway traction transformer?
No. Scott connection describes a winding arrangement. Traction service introduces its own voltage, insulation, loading, protection and approval requirements. Identify traction duty explicitly if that is the intended application.
How should a Scott conversion project be specified?
Provide a connection diagram, both output voltages and loads, frequency, phase relationship, duty cycle, insulation requirements and installation conditions. Agree terminal marking and the tests needed to verify the intended conversion before manufacture.

For Canadian and US projects, include the utility specification, service frequency and required approvals. State whether the order is for the transformer alone or an integrated equipment package.
